Qld: Beattie says Qld won't follow Tasmania to polls
BRISBANE, Feb 17 AAP - Queensland Premier Peter Beattie says he won't be following
the lead of Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon, who is expected to announce a state election
later today.
Mr Beattie today said he had no desire to go to the polls before April or May next
year, when cooler weather may be a factor in the election timing.
"I believe in full terms and no I'm not tempted," Mr Beattie told reporters today,
the fifth anniversary of the 2001 elections which Labor won convincingly.
"I love February/March elections and I'm actually warming towards May elections because
it moves away from the heat.
"February has been a little too warm, so I think we should perhaps think about April
or May next year.
"Everyone can get excited but I think everyone should just take a cold shower because
it will be a little way away yet."
Mr Lennon was expected to announce in Hobart today Tasmanians would head to the polls
on March 18 - the same day as the South Australian election.
Queensland's next election is due by May 2007.
