NSW: Bush revival plan calls for investment

A radical plan to revive rural New South Wales through a $200 million investment fundand expansion of regional universities has been proposed to help stem the population driftto cities.

The Daily Telegraph says the Country Mayors Association has put forward the plan withthe state's Farmers Association for 500,000 people in rural New South Wales.

The rural lobby wants a new green belt and agricultural zone on the metropolitan fringewhere more than $1 billion in agriculture and fertile fields are under threat from urbansprawl.

The report claims that $1.4 billion could be saved in infrastructure costs if 500,000people were settled in country areas instead of the city.
