Qld: Trial begins on dangerous driving charge

BRISBANE, Dec 4 AAP - A motorist told police he was distracted by the sound of a mobilephone before his utility truck and a van crashed, killing the van driver, a jury was toldtoday.

Mark Joseph Valmadre has pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving causing death whenhe appeared in the Brisbane District Court today.

Van driver Lee William Fountain died in the accident on the eastern service road ofthe Pacific Highway at Ormeau, south of Brisbane, on March 29, 2000.

At the start of Valmadre's trial today the jury was told witnesses would tell how hisutility veered onto the wrong side of the road before the collision.

They were told they would hear a recorded statement from Valmadre in which he woulddescribe how he was distracted by the sound of a mobile phone and had glanced down atit.

When he looked back at the road, Mr Fountain's van was right in front of him and hewas unable to avoid a collision.

Two days have been set down for the trial.
